Elon Musk Says Optimus Robot’s Value Outweighs That Of Tesla’s Cars Business

Elon Musk said Tesla’s robot, named Optimus, will be “worth more than the car business, worth more than FSD.”

An FSD subscription costs Tesla owners around $12,000, or up to $199 per month. Full self-driving is Tesla’s advanced driver assist system that uses cameras and computer vision to assist with some autonomous driving tasks.

The Tesla executive stated during the company’s first-quarter 2022 earnings call that the robot is still under development. The robot was first introduced in August 2021 during Tesla’s AI Day. The 5’8″ robot will use Tesla’s neural networks and the Dojo advanced supercomputer, and Musk envisions it performing tasks that would be considered drudgery otherwise – things like grocery shopping and other everyday tasks.

Tesla’s Austin gigafactory opened earlier this month, and Musk mentioned that a new wave of products, such as Optimus, would be introduced in 2023.

I was shocked at how little people realized the scope of the Optimus robot program. Those with an understanding of what Optimus will mean in the future, those who look closely, those who listen carefully, will understand that it will be worth more than the car business, worth more than FSD, said Musk on Wednesday’s earnings call
