Earlier this morning, Nintendo announced that it was acquiring longtime partner SRD (Systems Research and Development), a company that has helped Nintendo program some of its most iconic games, including Super Mario Bros.
SRD has been acquired by Nintendo for an undisclosed sum, which makes it a full-fledged subsidiary.
Nintendo in an official statement confirmed that SRD has been closely involved in the development of Nintendo video game software for nearly four decades. With its establishment in 1979, SRD worked with Nintendo on the Famicom, assisting with the programming of both Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros. for the console. It is reported that the studio has worked on virtually every Zelda game and that the studio recently completed Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Ring Fit Adventure.
A question was posed to Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa this month concerning acquisitions following Microsoft’s and Sony’s recent moves. Our company was built on the dedication of our employees who created our products and having people who do not possess Nintendo DNA in our group would not be beneficial, Furukawa replied at the time
As a result of these remarks, the purchase makes a lot of sense. SRD has been a long-time partner of Nintendo while also contributing significantly to its history.
It is expected that the acquisition will be completed on April 1, when the Japanese financial year begins.
