Oscar Winner AR Rahman And Film Maker Shekhar Kapoor Join Hands For A Musical For Expo 2020

In conjunction with Expo 2020, renowned composer AR Rahman and award-winning filmmaker Shekhar Kapur are collaborating on the song-dance extravaganza called ‘Why? The Musical’.The show will premiere at the Al Wasl Plaza in January and feature over 100 dancers and artists.

“I feel blessed and honoured to be creating a musical spectacle in collaboration with Expo 2020 Dubai and A.R. Rahman. Designed especially the for the largest projection dome in the world, Al Wasl Plaza, ‘Why? The Musical’ celebrates diversity and inclusivity, as it takes audiences on a spectacular journey,” said Kapur in statement.

They will produce a stage production that tells the story of a curious young girl and an old wise man, both of whom embark on a magical journey that inspires empathy for our planet and action to create a cleaner, safer, healthier world.

There will be seven original compositions by A.R. Rahman for this show, two of which were launched on December 22 during his concert at Expo 2020. Produced by Artists in Motion, the song features lyrics written by Sohaila Kapur, Dana Dajani, and Shivang.

More than 100 dancers, musicians and performers perform in this 45-minute show, which features stunning visuals on the largest 360-degree projection screen in the world.

“Wisdom starts with curiosity and, together, they provide hope and inspiration for a better future,” said AR Rahman.

In its eight-week run beginning in January 2022, ‘Why? The Musical’ will be performed in English up to four times per week. More information on the play’s dates and times will be made available soon.
