What is NeoCoV Virus – Wuhan Scientists Warn of New Coronavirus With High Death Rate

What is NeoCoV Virus

According to a report from the Russian news agency Sputnik, scientists are warning of a new type of coronavirus in South Africa, named ‘NeoCov’, that has a high death and transmission rate. The virus was first discovered in Chinese Wuhan in 2019.

The report says the NeoCov virus is not new. Associated with the MERS-CoV virus, it has caused outbreaks of coronavirus in Middle Eastern countries since 2012 and 2015. It is similar to the SARS-CoV-2 that causes coronavirus in humans.

Sputnik reported that NeoCoV is similar to the Middle East respiratory syndrome virus MERS-COV. NeoCoV has been found in South African bats and spreads through animals.

Study has found that NeoCoV and its close relative, PDF-2180-CoV have the ability to enter the body via Angiotensin-converting enzyme2 (ACE2) from bats and ACE2 from humans. Researchers have found in their study that one mutation can cause the virus to become transmissible to human cells, according to a report by Sputnik.

Wuhan University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced the discovery in a bioRxiv preprint published as a preprint. The new study has yet to be peer-reviewed.

Researchers found that the novel coronavirus posed a threat due to its various ways of binding to the ACE2 receptor compared to the known coronavirus. Due to this, neither antibodies nor proteins produced by people with respiratory diseases or who have been immunized will protect them against NeoCoV.

A Chinese study claims that NeoCoV combines the high mortality rate of MERS-high CoV (one in three infected people dies) and the high transmission rate of SARS-CoV-2.

According to the report, Russian experts from the Russian State Virology and Biotechnology Research Center released a statement on NeoCoV following a briefing on Thursday.

Data obtained by Chinese researchers about the NeoCoV coronavirus are known to the Vector research centre. As of now, a new coronavirus capable of actively spreading among humans is not the issue, it said, It’s important to further study and probe the potential risks outlined.
