According to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Russian flag carrier Aeroflot will no longer be allowed to fly in United Kingdom airspace or land in the country.
This ban is part of another round of British sanctions imposed over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. Russian Airlines usually flies between London and Moscow on a daily basis. As part of the slate of new sanctions announced by President Joe Biden during a televised address, the United States did not immediately impose the same restrictions on the airline.
Delta, along with Aeroflot, is a member of the SkyTeam Alliance and has flights to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), Dulles International Airport (IAD) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
Aeroflot’s foreign carrier permit has been suspended “until further notice” by the U.K. Civil Aviation Authority. “This means that Aeroflot will not be permitted to operate flights to or from the United Kingdom until further notice,” the statement said.
According to reports, Manchester United sought to end its sponsorship agreement with Aeroflot and canceled plans to travel with them on the airline’s charter plane to an upcoming match in Madrid.
