Alikhan Smailov Is Named Kazakhstan's Prime Minister

During a live broadcast of the lower house of parliament on state television, Kazakhstani President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev nominated Alikhan Smailov for prime minister on Tuesday.

Samilov, 49, was the first deputy prime minister in Tokayev’s previous cabinet, which was dismissed last week amid unrest in oil-rich Central Asia.

Kazakhstan’s interior ministry says security forces have seized 9,900 people as a result of the unrest.
