According to British media reports, Boris Johnson has agreed to resign, which will put an end to an unprecedented political crisis over his future.
A number of members of Johnson’s Cabinet have recently called on the president to resign as a result of ethics scandals. Nevertheless, he conceded after more than 40 ministers resigned from his government.
The BBC reported that Johnson would continue in his role as prime minister until the fall while the Conservative Party selects a new leader, who will replace him.
In a letter to Prime Minister Boris Johnson just 36 hours after he was appointed, the British Treasury chief Nadhim Zahawi called for his resignation, and another newly appointed Cabinet minister resigned. In his statement, Zahawi said Johnson knew the right thing to do was to “go now.” Zahawi was appointed late Tuesday to replace Rishi Sunak, who resigned after a series of ethics scandals because he could no longer support Johnson.
The Conservative Party’s landslide victory in the 2019 elections was a result of Johnson’s populist promise to “get Brexit done.”
In Sky drama This England, which will be aired in the fall, Kenneth Branagh portrays Johnson as he fights the Coronavirus pandemic, Brexit, and controversy in his personal and professional life.
